Army Cycle Road Race Championships
25 mile circuit race
FVS TRI and Army triathlete Graham Markham took the opportunity to try something a little different racing in the 25 mile cycle road race championships at Aldershot.
The event was based around a 1 mile circuit and although he found the change of discipline rather tough, Graham managed a creditable finish in the bunch.
Winning Weekend For FVS TRI!
FVS TRI recorded 3 wins over the weekend at 3 different events. Ellie Burton won the ladies race at the Tesco Olympic Triathlon, Penny Wylie won the ladies Newmarket Duathlon and Steve Harrison was 1st in the competitive 30-34 age group at the Bedford Classic Triathlon
Sunday August 28th
Bedford Classic
1500m river swim/40k bike/10k run
FVS TRI were the best represented Club at the Bedford Olympic distance triathlon with 15 members competing and a further 10 supporting the organising Club with marshalling duties.
The event was based around the town centre with the 1500m swim in the scenic but not so clear River Ouse. Steve Harrison was always in contention being 4th out of the river and finally finishing 5th overall and winning his age group.
This was a fantastic result as there were over 300 starters and Steve was only beaten by elite athletes!
Jon Gillham had an excellent race earning a PB for the course and just beating Ironman Gavin May who dropped down the distances to compete at Olympic and also had a slight course deviation for a mile or so!
Rob Wilson and Kevin Sambridge both had another excellent race firmly establishing themselves as sub 2:30 athletes this season, with Kevin in his novice year!
Excellent debuts for John Burgess breaking 2:30 in his first Olympic and also for Dave Hard not far behind in 2:32.
A special note for Jackie Perry and Ed Manson who both completed the race despite their difficulties! Jackie struggled to fix a puncture but soldiered on to finish almost half an hour behind her peers when some would have probably abandoned. Poor old Ed had a wasp sting on the lip during the run and finished with what can only be described as a natural botox treatment!

Sunday August 21st
IRONMAN UK Sherborne Dorset
3800m lake swim/180k bike/42k run
Dave Farthing is the latest FVS TRI member to become an Ironman joining the exclusive bunch of triathletes who compete by swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and then running a marathon!
Dave and Ian Ellery completed the inaugural UK Ironman event held on the scenic course at Sherborne in Dorset.
The start was delayed by over 2 hours due to mist on the lake and this of course meant many of the competitors would be finishing in the dark. Dave completed the course in 15:31:05 which meant he was still racing after midnight!
Experienced Ironman Ian Ellery also found the course hard going finishing in 14:10:10, 880th from 1134 finishers
Nearly 100 failed to finish due to the difficulty of the course and also presumably due to that extra mental commitment required to finish in the dark.

Swanage Olympic Triathlon
1500m sea swim/40k bike/10k run
Jon Gillham competed at the Swanage Classic Olympic Triathlon and was 33rd from a field of over 380 in a time of 2:18:09.
This difficult event had a split swim which required the athletes to get out at the half way turnaround point and run back along the sea wall diving in to finish the second leg. The very hilly bike was followed by an equally hilly run course as the event traversed the steepest bits of the Purbeck coast.
Sunday August 14th
Concorde Thames Valley Sprint Triathlon
400m pool swim/20k bike/5k run
New members Dan McGuigan and Dave Robinson competed in their first triathlons for FVS TRI at the Concorde Sprint held by Thames Valley Tri Club.
Dan was first home for the Club despite a 2 minute penalty after some confusion over the unusual bike transition.
Both are now hooked on the sport and will be training hard through the winter fro the 2006 race season!
