Top VET spot for Brian White in Stevenage 5k series
Brian White was 1st Vet 50 for the Stevenage 5K Series without even racing the final event. Busy elsewhere with a coaching commitment, Brian had done enough to secure victory in the 3 race series with only the best 2 results to score. Returning to somewhere near his best form despite prolonged injury problems, Brian was delighted with his result which meant he was lead runner for FVS TRI by over 1 ½ min with a best time of 17:06. On the night Rob Wilson was first home for the club in a new PB 18:47, which was an excellent finish for the year in a season where Rob was crowned Most Improved Triathlete of 2006. New member Richard Easterbrook continued to show improvement all the way through the 3 race series finishing with a new PB of 20:39. Having committed to giving up smoking (!) Richard is now well poised to see significant performance benefits in his first full season of triathlon with FVS TRI in 2007. Helen Shulver made her only appearance of the series and earned a new PB in 22:35 behind Danny Brooks in 21:39 making a welcome return to competition after a long lay off

Southgate shenanigans
27 members of FVS TRI made the trek to Southgate in North London to compete in the 3rd match of the 5 race Sunday Cross Country League. Jackie Perry led the ladies team home in 2nd place with her strongest performance to date finishing in 7th. The team race was so close that the 2nd and 3rd placed teams tied on points and only the fact that Helen Shulver finished in a higher position than the last scorer for Trent Park meant that FVS TRI held on to second. The womens’ team was made up of Jackie Perry (7th) Chris Yuill an excellent 11th and best position to date, Lesley Dutton 18th, Penny Wylie 20th and Helen Shulver the all important last scorer in 28th. The women were also 2nd in the Masters race and retain 2nd spot overall in the A Team and Masters Race Series.

There was plenty of close finishing in the long run in with lead lady Jackie Perry just staying away from the 8th placed runner in the sprint in. Richard Thomas, Tony Shortland and Drew Laurie continued their private battle with only 5 seconds separating the 3 as they struggled to win the run in. But just as competitive was Paul Dutton who earned 150th and last position for the Club with an epic sprint worthy of the track!
James Brooks and Nick Downing made their last appearances at Cross Country as they leave to join the RAF and to complete a Sports Physio Course respectively. They will be missed by their club mates as they have been loyal supporters and well liked within the Club.
The League rests now until February with the last 2 fixtures in successive weeks.
Sam Tophill ran the Bedford Half Marathon in 1:36 to finish 2nd FV40 and 279th overall from 1317 finishers
