Milton Keynes duathlon glory for FVS Tri

FVS Tri duathletes were in hot form again in the second of the three race Milton Keynes Big Cow Winter Duathlon Series.  Held at the Milton Keynes Bowl, the event comprised of a 4.5k run/16k bike/3.8k run. The bike course was over 12 laps and proved to be very exciting with 3 races all happening simultaneously but on a time delayed basis.  FVS Tri earned 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in some very close and competitive racing.

The ladies and junior races went off first in bitterly cold windy conditions.  Lesley Dutton was first home for the Club in a super 2nd position to add to her win in the first race securing her lead in the series. Penny Wylie was an excellent 3rd having lead Lesley throughout the bike leg, just being pipped on the run.  Sean Bradley returned to the Bowl to secure a 2nd spot in the junior race having won one of the summer races in 2005 and this topped off an excellent week as Sean was selected to compete for Beds County in the National Schools Cross Country.

In a closely competed male veterans’ race Steve James was first home for the Club in 3rd to add to his 2nd from race one and is now in contention for Series honours at the last race in March. Steve Chalk had a great race to finish 6th and Steve Mussett competed in his first multi sport event, and that was shock to the system!

The male senior race was the largest field with over 60 competitors, 6 of which were in FVS Tri colours.  Nick Downing took the honours just beating James Brooks by 8 seconds with Jon Gillham not far behind. This was a remarkable result as it was the first time Nick has competed.  He was first into transition after the run, followed by Jon and James in close order. The more experienced Gillham was through transition quickly to take and hold the lead on the technical 12 lap bike course. With James and Nick following Jon out on the last run, the order was reversed as they came home with victory for Nick! Great racing and a 23rd, 24th and 25th for FVS Tri!

Sunday League Cross Country- Royston

FVS TRI had a fantastic turnout at the penultimate Sunday League XC fixture at Royston.  With excellent support from family and the Sunday cycle group, there was plenty of noise to welcome Steve Harrison home in to 2nd place in the Men’s race to help secure a Men’s team position of 3rd on the day and 3rd overall in the competition

The veteran men were also well represented with Steve James leading home Brian White and Steve Chalk to secure a vets team win on the day and consolidate a 3rd overall.

Sam Tophill was first home for the ladies in the shorter 3 mile event and helped by Lesley Dutton and Jackie Perry secured a 2nd in the Vets race to consolidate their 2nd position in the Vets competition. In the open race the ladies managed a 4th which retains 3rd overall with only one race remaining.

With both teams performing well, FVS TRI are now 3rd overall in the combined competition which is an excellent performance considering they are up against specialist running and cross country clubs.

Sussex Beacon Half Marathon

3 members of FVS TRI travelled to Brighton and were blessed with less than perfect weather for the weekends Half Marathon. In driving rain all 3 struggled to achieve times with Mike Utton leading the group home in 1:32:09 followed by Rob Wilson in 1:40:18, both using the race as a build up to their first IronMan Triathlon event in Austria in the summer.

Neil Rose made his competitive debut for the Club and was pleased with his result despite the weather.

Over 500 runners observed the minutes silence in memory of Paul Pearce who was due to race in the event.

Gavin May was in super form to record a new PB of 1:56:35 and a 16th overall position.

John Burgess was using the race as part of his build up for the London Marathon, having won a place in the FVS TRI Club ballot, and finished in an excellent 2:14:06 to give a top 75 finish in his first 30k event.

Sunday 5th February

Watford Half Marathon

FVS TRI took to the roads this weekend with a number competing in the Watford Half Marathon in near perfect running conditions.

Mike Russell used the race as a build up for London Marathon, having won a place in the Club ballot, and finished an excellent 98th overall with a 1:25:52.
