Milton Keynes Olympic Triathlon
1.5k lake swim / 40k bike / 10k run
21 members of FVS TRI completed the Milton Keynes Olympic Triathlon in the biggest outing for the Club since launch last year. In fact FVS TRI was the second largest Club there and certainly had the loudest supporters.
Many Club members who were not competing joined other family members to provide the now legendary FVS TRI vocal support, and much appreciated it was.
Many of the triathletes were competing at this distance for the first time, Steve Harrison being one of them and he was the fastest FVS TRI member on the day!
Other performances of note
Mike Blanden (45-49) 7th fastest time and the oldest FVS TRI male competitor!
Darren “woody” Woodhall best 40-45 time for FVS TRI
Penny Wylie 1st FVS TRI lady
Simon Hall 14 minute course PB and 2nd fastest FVS TRI
Jackie Perry 16 min PB (and beat husband and Club coach Keith!)

Ashwell Training Duathlon
3m run / 11m bike / 1.5m run
FVS TRI members spent a pleasant summers evening racing around Ashwell and Steeple Morden on the the Annual Club Training Duathlon. Gavin missed out on the course record by just 12 seconds. Not bad after only completing the German Ironman less than a fortnight ago.
Lots of great performances from both new and old members and a well organised event which is highly recommended.
Full results can be downloaded in the attached Excel spreadsheet Ashwell Results
The Longest Day Triathlon 18th July
2.4m open water swim/112m bike/ 26.2m run
Adam Laycock continued the long course success for FVS TRI with a 5th place overall at The Longest Day Triathlon. Adam completed the Midlands based event in 10 hours 14 mins and continued his excellent build up to probably the worlds hardest long course event “The Norseman Challenge” in Norway next month.
Adam will be joined by Mick Clark who will be competing at Milton Keynes next weekend together with around 30 other FVS TRI members.

MASSIVE PB FOR JACKIE PERRY!
VERULAM 25Mile Time Trial
FVS TRI Jackie Perry and Sam Tophill competed in the 25 mile cycle time trial held on the A10 near Hertford.
The fast course and ideal weather conditions enabled Jackie to improve her PB by a massive 8 mins 11 seconds to 1:07:17(22.29mph). This placed Jackie 2nd in the most improved competition and won her some sports nutrition product. The 1st prize was a £600 specialist time trial bike frameset …next time!
Sam Tophill recorded a fantastic 1:10:47 in her debut 25m TT which is an average speed of 21.20 mph.
GAVIN QUALIFIES FOR HAWAII!!
Every year over 50,000 athletes from 50 countries try to qualify for Ironman Hawaii. Only 1600 qualify and Gavin May from FVS TRI is one of them for 2004
IRONMAN FRANKFURT 11th July
2.4m open water swim/112m bike/ 26.2m run
Gavin was one of 2000 hopefuls to line up for the 7.00am start for Ironman Germany held in Frankfurt. Gavin was a magnificent 12th in his age group from 427 and thereby achieved one of the magical qualification places for the Hawaii event. His time of 9:37:40 was good enough to be 77th overall, including the elite athletes in the field.
After a steady 2.4mile swim in 1:08:37 (214th/437) Gavin made good progress on the bike 5:08:39 to rise to 10th and with a 3:15:27 marathon to finish, he had done enough to earn his place.
Gavin dedicated his whole season to this single race and even gave up his GB place in the Age Group World Championships in Sweden to achieve his lifetime dream of making it to Hawaii.
Gavin is a strong family man and his team support him wherever he competes. They made the trip to Frankfurt and joined the other 300,000 spectators to create an atmosphere second to none, reported Gavin. With so many spectators, the cycle route was almost overrun reducing the traffic to single file, much like a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
Gavin will be travelling to Hawaii in October and if any local interests would like to sponsor or support him, please contact Keith Perry from FVS TRI on 07974 234958
Jim Rees also competed and finished 67th in the 40-44 age group in 10:29:16.
ETON SUPERSPRINT 11th July
400m open water swim/19.5k bike/5k run
Michelle Pratt continued her excellent season with an age group 2nd at Eton last weekend. She completed the swim in 8:57, bike in 36:47 and finished off with a 23:27 run.
Michelle joined FVS TRI this year as a relative novice and has improved dramatically through the season due to her excellent application in training. She too will be competing at Milton Keynes next weekend in the standard Olympic Distance.
FVS TRI TRAINING CAMP
La Morzine Vallee d’Aulps 91km Bike Race 11th July
Club coaches Keith Perry and Jon Gillham were joined by Jeremy Prodger in the French Alps for some triathlon training last week. On the first day they all signed up for a 91km cycle race taking in a couple of famous Cols which regularly feature in the Tour De France.
All 3 achieved the gold standard time with Jon and Jeremy finishing in 81st and 82nd in 4:03:30 and 4:04:45 respectively. Keith was a little further behind in 4:46:16 but was still a creditable 109th from 500 finishers.
The Club hope to organise a trip to the area next year and will definitely feature another of the well organised Randonee style events.
Other News
Active FVS TRI member Pete Eames was in supporting mode this weekend as his 8 year old daughter Sarah competed in the Kings Langley Junior Tri. Sarah was 15th in her age group and completed the 80m swim, 1mile bike and 800m run in a super 17:16.

Adam Laycock competed for FVS TRI in the 100mile cycle time trial based around the A11 and A14. The event was somewhat affected by the windy conditions but Adam still managed to average 22.39mph for the 4 hours 28 mins he took to complete the course.
