International Representation for FVS TRI!

FVS TRI’s James Brooks represented GB in the 20-24 Age Group in the World Duathlon Championships in Canada, and was the first Britain home in his age group!  Delighted to qualify in his first season with an excellent performance at the Cambridge Duathlon, the FVS TRI athlete was 14th in the 20-24 age group in a time of 2:20:29 for the tough 10k run/40k bike/5k run. (Splits run 41:25/1:14:48/24:17).  James leads the way in 2006 with a further 4 FVS TRI members qualifying for GB representation later in the year. Ironmen Gavin May and Kevin Smart will build on their recent IRONMAN Austria performances and will be joined by Penny Wylie in the European Long Course Age Group Championships at Almere Holland  in August. Jackie Perry will represent the 45-49 age group at the World Olympic Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland in September.

Nearer home, top FVS TRI Cyclist Michael Summers continued his 2006 campaign with a bunch finish in the 106k Redbridge Road Race

Steve and Boris Duel at MK

FVS TRI showed their strength in depth at the weekend with thirty seven competitors at the Milton Keynes Olympic Triathlon making them the biggest club at the Grand Prix event which attracted over 1000 entries.  All in matching race kit, the FVS TRI blue train rolled on with fantastic results and PBs throughout the field.  At the front TRISPORTS supported Steve Harrison battled with Boris Chambon to be first home for FVS TRI. With under a minute separating the two, Steve took the honours with a PB of 1:51:23, over 5 minutes faster than last year for the 1500m lake swim, 40k bike and 10k run. Boris, moving up to the Olympic Distance for the first time recorded an amazing 1:52:51 and this gave FVS TRI 4th and 5th overall.  Steve won the 30/34 age group with Boris earning a bronze in the 20/24 age group.  Veteran Ian Mackerness continued to shine with a 2:00:07 performance for bronze in the competitive 40/44 age group and 28th overall.  Nick Downing led home the other first timers with a 2:10:27, Steve James 2:16:48, Ian Hobbs 2:28:56 Helen Shulver 2:30:07, Chris Baxter 2:32:18, Mick Humphris 2:39:08 and Richard Thomas 2:41:30.  There were  also some massive personal best performances throughout the field with Paul Dutton leading the way with a 15 minute improvement over last year 2:39:25 (9 minutes on the swim alone!) and Paula Adams with an 11 minute improvement to 2:22:59 to catapult her to first FVS TRI female and 5th in age group.  Coaches Dawn Green and Mic Clark showed an improvement in form to finish 6 and 9 minutes faster respectively with Mic leading a group of 5 athletes who all finished within 6 seconds of each other!  Chris Yuill improved on her previous best at London by over 21 minutes with Dave Hard and Mike Russell both improving on their previous Olympic PBs by over 10 minutes.  Pete Eames competed in his first Olympic for 10 years and recorded his fastest time! Not so lucky was junior Sean Bradley who had a storming swim and then had to retire after a big off on the bike caused by a mechanical failure. He will be back in training this week with a big road rash shoulder tattoo as a happy memento of the day!

FVS TRI IRONMEN!

IRONMAN Austria was the place to be this weekend with eight members of Hitchin based triathlon Club FVS TRI competing in the ultimate triathlon challenge - 2.4 mile lake swim, 112 mile bike is then a full 26.2 mile marathon to finish!  Veteran IronMan and Hawaii Qualifier Gavin May led the team home in 155th overall with an impressive 9:52:11, his second time under the prestigious 10 hour barrier, and experienced IronMan competitor Kevin Smart also had a superb race to finish under 11 hours with a 10:57:23.  With a super 11:03:09, newly crowned IronMan Mike Utton was the fastest of the 6 others all making their debut at the ultimate distance. Gavin and Mike battled for the lead on the bike, Mike having led by 10 minutes after his super swim. They eventually entered the last transition together and even had time for a quick chat before the run which saw Gavin using all his experience to ease ahead on every lap.  Although pleased with his overall time, Mike was disappointed with his run and will be back to break the 11 hour barrier!  Rob Wilson (11:23:05) managed to beat training buddy and friendly rival  Darren (Woody) Woodhall (11:49:33) and Graham Markham just managed to get in under the 12 hour mark with an 11:59:45!  Perhaps the greatest achievement on the day was that of IronMan Tim Somers who was plagued with injury and self doubt all the way through his preparation and finished the event in a superb 15:26:42 despite all his problems. Tim had been unable to complete any run training of note due to a persistent calf injury and looked an unlikely starter all the way until the day. Sheer commitment and drive saw him through and he is a real inspiration to all those tempted to test themselves over the distance.  Mandy Simpson was the only female FVS TRI representative and she completed the course in 16:24:00 in the dark with another superb demonstration of mental determination!
