Big Half Honours for Helen

FVS TRI’s Helen Shulver was second female and winner of the 30-34 age group in the Trentham Big Half Triathlon. Racing over the half Ironman distance for the first time, Helen completed the 1.9k swim, 56mile bike and 13.1 mile half marathon run to finish in an overall time of 5:23:51.  Although the lake was nice and shallow ensuring a warm swim, the conditions were very poor with murky water making swimming at best unpleasant. The swim leg also included a 500m run to transition in shoes which is unusual for this type of event. Helen completed the swim and long transition in 45:04, the bike in 2:45:22 and the half marathon in a very respectable 1:53:25. Planning ahead Helen has entered Ironman Switzerland in 2008 to complete the full set!

FVS TRI was the biggest Club racing at the Fairlands Valley Lake Relays with 11 teams in total. Top honours went to the ladies vets’ team of Sam Tophill, Lesley Dutton and Jackie Perry who took Gold in a combined time of 37:26 for the 3 legs of 3000m. The 4 ladies teams of 3 runners were 5th,10th,17th and 32nd overall from 42 teams.  The 7 men’s teams of 5 runners were 6th,18th,22nd,28th,34th,38th and 42nd from 51 teams. In the individual times for the 3000m event, Steve Harrison was 5th fastest overall in a time of 9:15 and Alison Wood was 9th female in 11:11.  Gavin May, Brian White and the Humphris brothers ran 2 legs to make up the team numbers.

2012 Olympic Test Event and Etape Du Tour!

FVS TRI’s Steve Harrison was selected to race the 2012 Triathlon Test Event at Hyde Park based around the Serpentine and on part of the course used by the Tour De France Prologue on its recent visit to London. This Elite race was open only to the top 40 ranked GB Elite athletes and invited Internationals and was based around a new super sprint knockout format.  With 2 heats of 300m swim/2 lap 7k bike and 1 lap 2.5k run the races were fast and furious and an ideal format for the enthusiastic supporters. With 8 to qualify from each heat and 4 fastest losers, Steve was left in suspense finishing 11th in the first heat This was an excellent result as he was 20th from the swim and had to work alone to regain position on the bike coming through with a strong run to finish.  Due to problems with the timing system, the fastest qualifiers were only notified 10 minutes before the final which was not ideal preparation. Steve rose to the occasion and took his place in the final ranked 19th after the heats battling strongly all the way through the frenetically short race to be pipped for 18th on the line by the dip.  The overall event was a great success and was won by current World Champion Tim Don. FVS TRI again supported the triathlon community providing marshals and a race official for the event and hope to be there in 2012!  Steve was very pleased with his strong cycling having just collected his new bike provided by supporters Letchworth based Triathlon specialist retailer TRISPORTS.  He will now focus his attention on the Elite Race at the London Triathlon in August.

Earlier in the week Steve James completed the Etape Du Tour which is traditionally the toughest mountain stage of the Tour De France. The professionals completed the 15th stage on Monday somewhat faster than the 8500 amateur cyclists who embarked on the 199km stage which included 5 Cols and 53km of climbing. Steve was pleased to be one of the 4300 who survived to the finish completing the stage in just over 9 hours. This event is very special with full road closures and support vehicles giving it a real flavour of the actual Tour.

Kev Smart, Dave Hard and Tim Smith completed the Legbreaker Cyclosportive around the Peak District. The event also known as "The Hell of the Moorlands” was over  130k route taking  in nearly 9000ft of climbing, and despite several punctures and a broken chain to repair the trio completed the route in 6 hours 57 mins.

FVS TRI Senior Run Coach Brian White demonstrated his enduring good form by finishing 12th overall and 1st Vet50 in the Milton Keynes Half Marathon in a time of 1:21:39

Mark Robertson returned to his old club in the North East to race the Sun City Triathlon. He completed the 750m sea swim, 20k bike and 5k run in 01:02:44 finishing 6th overall from 102 starters and beating many of his old team mates!

The main event of the weekend in respect of participation was the Milton Keynes Olympic triathlon with over 20 FVS TRI members racing.  3 members of the triathlon coaching team battled for top honours over the weather affected course which was reduced to a 1500m swim, 35k bike and 9k run due to flooding. Jon Gillham continued his rich vein of form with a victory over top IRONMAN specialist Gavin May by 1 second! Simon Hall was just under minute behind in 2:03:17.  Sean Bradley won the overall Junior title in a time of 2:21:16 and Helen Shulver showed her continuing improvement with a 2:17:05 to finish first female for the club. Stewart Kay raced his first Olympic and recorded an excellent time of 2:16:49 and was most disappointed that the course was short.  Unlucky Jackie Perry suffered a puncture and mechanical failure to limp home in 2:45:15. She received huge support and recognition from team mates for her completing the event despite her problems.
