STEVE DEMOLISHES THE FIELD AT DAMBUSTER!
FVS TRI’s Steve Harrison was outright winner at the Dambuster Olympic Triathlon which hosted the Age Group World Championship Qualifiers at Rutland Water. The 1500m lake swim, 26.6 mile bike and 10k run was organised in age group waves, starting at 5 minute intervals. Steve was so far ahead in his race that he sprinted in with the winner of the wave ahead, almost appearing to be second on the day but in fact winning the race by just under 5 minutes from the nearest competitor in front in a time of 1:58:37! Although not first out of the swim, Steve was able to catch many of his rivals on his new bike supplied by Letchworth based TRISPORTS as part of a support package to the talented athlete. Steve’s blistering run pace saw him running close to his best with a 32 minute 10k to finish ensuring the comfortable win. Although pleased with his performance, there is still more to come and Steve will now work on transition speed with the FVS TRI coaching team before his next major race.
Seeking an Age Group World Championship qualifying slot, Jackie Perry had to finish in the top 5 in her age group to ensure a place on the plane to the World Championships in Switzerland in September this year. With appalling weather conditions, the rain provided an extra challenge with bike handling skills playing a major part in negotiating a safe race. With a strong run to finish across the dam at Rutland Water, Jackie secured the 5th slot in a time of 2:37:30 and will now represent GB in the 45/49 age group to add to her World Duathlon Championship qualification in 2004. Honours were even in the other races within the Club with 2nd home for FVS TRI Simon Hall beating partner Sam Tophill, and Lesley Dutton beating husband Paul by just under 2 minutes. The battle of the sexes will continue next month at Milton Keynes Olympic.

AQUATHLON
Earlier in the week 4 members of FVS TRI got up very early for the St Albans Sunrise Aquathlon organised on the longest day. First home for the Club was Rob Wilson in a time of 28:05 for the 500m swim/5k run which placed him 12th overall and 2nd in the 35/39 age group. Anna Priestley showed a welcome return to form to finish 3rd in age group in a time of 37:05. Sadly Ian Hobbs was disqualified after a super swim only to be sent the wrong way on the run, obviously too early for the marshals!

RUN RESULTS
Simon Patenall had a similarly unfortunate weekend as he punctured 3 times on the way to run the Trent Park Triffic Trail 10k. Only have supplies to fix 2 flats and having suffered a little road rash after the third blow-out he ran 2 miles carrying his bike to the start to record a rather disappointing, but understandable 45:15
Gerry Corrance started his build up for the Berlin Marathon with a run out in the North Downs Run 30km. Despite the dozens of stiles and gates to negotiate, he completed the race in 2:39:00

Perfect Day at The Zoo for Hall
Simon Hall sped to victory in the Whipsnade Wild Animal Park 10k, formerly The Dunstable 10k in a super time of 34.38. A member of FVS TRI, Simon now principally competes in triathlon using such events as preparation for the multi sport races. Although a little off his best, Simon was pleased with the results and enjoyed the scenic 3 lap course around the Zoo.
UK Half IronMan 70.3 - Six members of FVS TRI travelled to Dorset to compete in the UK leg of the Half IronMan 70.3 World Series. The 70.3 is so called as it reflects the total distance of the 3 events that make up the triathlon event; 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and the 13.1 mile run. Veteran IronMan Ian Ellery was first home for the Club in a time of 6:11:35 resplendent in his white version of the Club Trisuit especially made for the heat of IronMan Lanzarote. Close behind in his debut half IronMan distance was Kevin Sambridge in 6:12:59. Another Veteran IronMan Robbie Laughton made his competitive debut for FVS TRI and led home Marc Trussell, Pete Timmins and Bradley Baynham, all debutants at the distance.

STEVE JOINS THE ELITE AT WINDSOR
FVS TRI’s Steve Harrison was invited to join the Elite Race at The
Windsor Triathlon this weekend. The TRISPORTS supported athlete was
racing at the Elite Level for the first time and was in good company with the
race attracting a top field of triathletes who represent GB on the World Cup
Circuit and also raced in the Athens Olympics. The event based in the
Thames and around the grounds of Windsor Castle is recognized as the best race
in the UK and was won by Olympian Tim Don in 1:52:44. Steve finished in 25th
from 49 Elite starters in a respectable time of 2:00:06, a time good enough to
win the age group event which had run earlier with the winner recording a time
2:02:09 from 1533 starters. Steve was in the second group out of the swim
and managed to join the chasing pack of cyclists for the 25 mile bike leg. With
a blistering time of 59:32 for the 25 miles he was able to pull back some of the
swim deficit, bettering the lead cycle groups’ time by nearly 20 seconds. In the
heat and after such an heroic bike split, Steve suffered a little on the run
with a 37:59 for the 10K which is several minutes outside his best. Steve
now looks forward to racing with the Elite field on a more regular basis and
building on the exciting experience of Windsor.
In the earlier age group race FVS TRI was represented by five athletes with
James Grierson first home in 2:23:07 followed by James Brooks in his
first Olympic distance event in a super time of 2:25:57. Danny McGuigan
also completed his first Olympic in a time of 2:38:33 and loved it!
Matt Hickman competed in his first race for FVS TRI finishing the shorter
Sprint event in 1:50:50

!
In a fantastic action packed weekend, FVS TRI athletes competed in seven events in five different areas of the country!
Penny Wylie was first Veteran female in the Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon in a time of 5:18:35. The sea swim was a very cold 1900m followed by a 56 mile bike and half marathon to finish! Penny will be representing GB at the European Long Distance Championships in Holland later in the year and this proved to be a most encouraging first outing.
Also racing over the middle distance in North Wales were 4 FVS TRI triathletes all using the Bala Middle Distance lake based event as build up to IronMan Austria. Gavin May was first home for the Club in 4:09:34 which placed him an excellent 13th from 279 finishers. Gavin will also be joining the GB Age Group Team racing in Holland having completed the July Austria IronMan event. Mike Utton was 2nd home for the Club in 4:26:39 (36th) followed by Graham Markham (74th) and Darren (Woody) Woodhall (93rd) in 4:43 and 4:49:43 respectively.
