HEREWARD RELAY GLORY FOR FVS TRI

FVS TRI was victorious in the 4 stage Hereward Relay with a win for the men and a second for the ladies. The men’s’ team covered the 38.4 miles from Peterborough Cathedral to Ely Cathedral, in 4:05:50 on a course that went from road to bridleways, over fields and bridges and even through calf deep standing water on a  closed flooded road on the final stage!  The historic victory for the men was made even more special as they were joined by the ladies who were 2nd in a time of 4:49:15.  Club Coach and A Team captain Brian White was particularly pleased as he had been trying to win the race for the last 5 years! The 5 teams entered by FVS TRI were all hit by injury and illness before the day and Brian himself was only drafted into the A team when he became available due to the cancellation of a coaching course!  There was a ladies stage win for Jane Chappell on leg and Steve Harrison was robbed of a final stage victory due to being sent off course due to bad signage. The deviation did not however affect the overall result with Steve leading the men’s A team to overall victory. Steve had also amazingly competed the day before at the Wolverton 5 Mile road race scoring an excellent 3rd spot with a time of 25.38!  Karen Dodsworth had also used the event as a warm up for the relay running for her first claim club NHRR and again being drafted in as a late replacement due to illness.

The men’s A team were led off by Steve Wells who, despite returning after long term injury still managed a 1st M45 for the stage and an overall 10th. Brian White managed to gain 4 positions and was 2nd M50 for the stage handing over to Simon Hall for stage 3. Simon was running following a kick in the face from a horse earlier in the week and was nursing chipped teeth and bruised pride but still managed to bring the team up to 4th with a 3rd place overall on the stage. Steve Harrison was fast enough to lead the team to victory despite his off course issues which meant he only managed a disappointing 3rd for the stage.

The ladies A team was led off by Jackie Perry who was 1st F45, followed by Sam Tophill on stage 2 for the longest leg at 11.6 miles. Jane Chappell gave the team the lead with her stage win and Paula Adams was 1st F35 on the final stage  but the team lost out by just  under a minute to the first placed ladies team from Cambridge who regained the race lead when Paula was delayed crossing a dual carriageway!

There were also strong performances throughout the other FVS TRI teams with Steve Chalk returning to form with a 2nd M50 in Stage 3 and Lesley Dutton a 3rd F45 in the final stage.  The intra club battle was settled with the Ladies A Team beating the Men’s B team by 1:18, much to the bemusement of the men who were leading for much of the event! Mark Grayson was running injured and Jane and Paula’s heroic efforts were just enough to mean victory for the ladies over the final stage.  The event was much enjoyed by all and FVS TRI will be looking to do the double next year!

KEV SHINES DOWN UNDER!

Another weekend, another World championships for FVS TRI athletes!  Kevin Smart represented GB in the Long Course Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Canberra which he described as the hardest race of his life!  With several IRONMAN events under his belt and a GB European Age Group Championships earlier in the year, Kevin was ideally prepared for the big one down under.  A 4k 2 lap swim,120k bike and 30k run proved to be harder than any IRONMAN despite the shorter distances involved. A combination of high temperatures, high winds and a hilly course meant a tough race. Kevin still managed 39th in his World Age Group and 3rd in the 30-34 age group for GB finishers and was 225th overall from a field of over 600 starters.  Kevin will now take a well earned rest after a fantastic season and then plan for 2007

CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

In the second Sunday League Cross Country fixture at Digswell, FVS TRI managed to hold on to their 2nd position overall with strong performances from the women and solid men’s team performance despite loss of key runners with injury.  An excellent debut in the league from Paula Adams and a welcome return from Sam Tophill gave the ladies an excellent 2nd overall and a resounding win in the masters or veterans competition.  Paula led home the women with a 6th overall and Jackie Perry was the leading W45 and 10th overall. Sam Tophill (12th), Lesley Dutton (13th) and Chris Yuill (20th) were the other scorers in the women’s’ team competition and with 5 to score. The masters’ team of Paula, Jackie and Sam took overall honours on the day to consolidate the 2nd position after 2 fixtures.  The women are now second overall in all competitions.  In the men’s competition Steve Harrison stamped his dominance on the League with a strong win beating the 2nd placed athlete by 25 seconds. Coach Brian White returned to Cross Country to deliver a 2nd place finish for the Club and 15th overall and 1st placed M50 veteran.  The 8 scoring men were Steve Harrison, Brian White, Mike Russell, Steve Chalk, Mark Grayson, Steve James, Jon Gillham and top FVS TRI Junior Sean Bradley were third on the day and retain second position overall in the League.  The masters’ team of Brian White, Mike Russell, Steve Chalk and Steve James were third on the day and consolidate 2nd overall.  Debuts on the country for Andrew Chadwick, Jeff Ryan and Sally Harkins and a welcome return from overseas to Gary Shanahan.
