Sunday 17th October
Gavin May is a Hawaii Finisher!
FVS TRI member Gavin May (36) completed the 26th Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in a time of 11 hours 59 minutes and 50 seconds!
A very emotional Gavin was delighted to have completed the arduous event which saw him placed 900th from the 1690 starters.
The 2.4 mile ocean swim featured a 15 foot swell and 50mph winds characterised the 112mile bike. With just a 26.2mile full marathon to finish, temperatures in the mid 80s and high humidity tested even the toughest athlete.
Gavin qualified for the world’s premier triathlon with a 9:37:40 performance at Ironman Germany over the same distance, clearly showing how testing the conditions were in Hawaii.
Having prepared for the conditions with a week in a special chamber at the University Of Hertfordshire, Gavin was also able to acclimatise further spending with a weeks training on the course before the race.
Ten members of Gavin’s family were with him in Hawaii to support throughout the event, and all had matching supporters T shirts in full FVS TRI team colours!

Club coach Keith Perry was able to keep tabs on Gavin’s performance as the event was relayed live via the internet. The time difference meant many trips from bed to check progress as the race started 8.00pm our time and Gavin finished just as FVS TRI were starting their Sunday training!
On speaking to Gavin he was overcome with emotion having completed the “original” triathlon and he said that “everybody should try and do this race once just for the incredible atmosphere”. Sadly the reality is that you have to be a very special athlete to compete in Hawaii, something most of us will only be able to dream about!
