Rob takes on the Sisters
FVS TRI’s Rob Wilson used his IronMan training to good effect to finish 112th from 600 finishers in the Beachy Head Marathon. Hoping to break 4 hours for the challenging off road course, he finally recorded 4:04 after spraining an ankle just 2 miles from the finish having climbed over 1200m on a course which took in the notorious Severn Sisters.

Steve storms the cross country!
Top triathlete Steve Harrison returned to cross country and won the opening league fixture helping the FVS TRI men’s team to second place overall despite several key athletes missing with injury or competing elsewhere. With 38 triathletes competing for FVS Tri against most of the major specialist run clubs in the area, the Club was pleased to take second overall based on a combined 2nd in the men’s and 3rd in the women’s. In addition the FVS TRI men’s B team lead the second competition rankings with the Masters Team made up of veteran athletes also in second spot for both men’s and women’s after race 1 of the 5 race series that concludes in February. With 8 men to score Steve Harrison led home Gavin May, Paul Gibb, Mark Grayson, James Brooks, Mike Russell, Mark Young and Gerry Corrance. Jackie Perry was the lead female in 9th and with 5 in the team, Leslie Dutton, Kate Turner, Helen Shulver and Penny Wylie were the other scorers in the A Team match. With North Herts Road Runners not competing in the Sunday Cross Country League, this meant that the members of NHRR who also compete for FVS TRI were able to support their second claim club. Karen Dodsworth, Anna Priestly, Mark Young and Mick Humphris all proved welcome additions to the team scores. There were competitive debuts from a host of new members with Mark Young, David Welch, John Humphris, Stewart Kay, Max Lepoutre, Kate Turner and Penny Riley all featuring.

Standalone 10K – Story of 2 Steves!
Top triathlete Steve Harrison took 2nd place overall at the Letchworth based Standalone 10k improving on his 4th from last year in a TOP TIME OF 32:57. Steve Chalk was the leading Vet 50 runner in 36:21 which placed him 26th overall. FVS TRI were the top local club with a 2nd in the men team and 3rd in the women’s team competitions, only beaten by specialist running club Garden City Runners who filled all the other slots. NHRR were 3rd in the men’s with Fairlands Valley Spartans only managing 6th in both male and female competitions. Although lucky with the weather, the course was slower this year due to strong winds which meant most were slower than last year. Newest members Drew Lowrie and Kate Turner showed well with Kate making the ladies team and Drew beating mate Richard Thomas, the guy introduced him to the Club! Also competing for the first time was cyclist Tim Smith (husband of Alison Clayton Smith) who managed to beat his target time of the hour with a 57:21. Still training for forthcoming competitions, Gavin May and Kevin Smart used the event as part of their Sunday training, dropping in from a long bike to complete the 10k and then off to finish the bike training! Gavin will be competing in the 70.3 Half Ironman World championships in November with Kevin off to Canberra for the World Age Group Long Course Championships.
