Thinking about Triathlon?

Completing a triathlon is well within the capabilities of most people however it requires a commitment to regular training that can come as a shock to those who have no sporting background at all.

FVS TRI is keen to support fresh athletes, however due to limited coaching and physical resources we assign attainable entry standards to our coached swim and cycle sessions.

We will however not turn anyone away from the club and we will support and encourage you to develop to achieve the minimum standards.

The First 4 Steps

1.       Read Up

There are lots of publications available on training for triathlon for complete beginners to elite athletes, this will teach you about basic technique, training, equipment and skill.

2.       Build Up

Running is the best way to do this, you should aim to be able to run 5K in less than 30 mins, that is just under 10mins a mile. At that point join our running club and attend Tuesday and Saturday run sessions to meet other runners and triathletes.

Also start practicing swimming, get some lessons if possible and get some miles in on the bike.

3.       Kit Up

Triathlon is not a cheap sport but it is worth getting good kit, our local shop  Trisports can help set you up a good entry level starters kit and there is plenty of advice and assistance within the club to help you find cycling equipment to suit the most tightly constrained budgets, read our Introduction to Triathlon document for more on the type of equipment you will require.

4.       Measure Up

These are the basic entry requirements to our key sessions, once you have achieved these you can train in our regular sessions, you will be stretched but not holding others back and it will ensure you have a successful first triathlon.

The First Race

For us triathlon, duathlon and/or aquathlon is all about achieving personal goals within racing, we encourage and support all new athletes to race for the club at least once in their first season.

This helps to discourage those who are just along for fitness or multisport training and ensures that we can help you focus on getting through and achieving your goal.
